Investigation Reveal Cause of 2022 Dallas Air Show Collision

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has unveiled the findings of its investigation into the fatal mid-air collision during the Wings Over Dallas airshow on November 12, 2022. The incident, which involved a Boeing B-17G bomber and a Bell P-63F Kingcobra fighter, tragically resulted in six fatalities and raised critical concerns about airshow safety.

The report highlights a lack of adequate planning and oversight as the primary factors contributing to the crash. Event organizers relied on a “see-and-avoid” approach that failed to assign specific altitude levels or separation protocols for the aircraft. This approach proved dangerously unsuitable for vintage planes, particularly given their limited visibility.
Pre-flight briefings also came under scrutiny for not establishing clear flight paths or safety spacing. Pilots were left without the necessary guidance to ensure proper separation during the show. These systemic oversights, combined with the limitations of the aging aircraft, created the conditions that led to the collision.
The NTSB has recommended more stringent safety measures for airshows, including detailed pre-show planning, precise altitude and separation protocols, and improved briefings to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The findings serve as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in aviation displays and the need for comprehensive safety frameworks.
