Many people have a negative perception of the single turboprop engine. It is commonly compared to a twin-engine. These engine systems are constantly being compared with incorrect data and information! We are here today to solve these myths for you! 

1. Single Turboprops are Dangerous because there’s only one engine

A single turboprop engine is an engine with a single propeller at the front of the aircraft which has been designed to reduce the common risk of engine failure in most jet aircrafts. One of the most common jet engine failures is due to exhaustion or external factors like volcanic ash and bird strikes.

Researchers have studied and tested both engine types for several years. In recent years, the accident rate amongst single-engine turboprops is actually lower than twin-engine aircrafts. Many pilots have said that operating a twin-engine plane has more challenges in comparison to single turboprops. These single turboprop engines are designed to never be exposed to stressful conditions and high temperatures while operating at full capacity.

2. It takes too long to get to my destination with a Single Turboprop Engine

Many people believe as there is only one engine, it would imply that it would operate/fly at a lower speed to prevent overheating. That’s wrong

The Pilatus PC-12 refines aerodynamics as it can cruise at a speed of 537 kms per hour whereas a common twin engine plane can only 409 miles per hour.

3. The flight on a Single Turboprop Plane is Noisy and Loud 
Many believe that single turboprops are noisy as it has a single propeller operating in the front. This is a myth. The propeller is designed and tested to not create additional noise so you can fly safely in peace.

The military and emergency companies have used single turboprop engines for decades due to its low noise, reliability and overall craftsmanship.

4. Single Turboprop Planes are too small and crowded 
A single turboprop plane typically is lighter in comparison to their multi-engine counterparts. It is expected for them to carry a lighter load. That is incorrect, single turboprops are able to carry significantly higher loads as they do not have the weight of the second engine. By removing the second engine, the single turboprop is able to carry a heavier load and work more efficiently (less fuel consumption per passengers). By reducing the amount of engines, it reduces maintenance costs, increases the range and have a more eco-friendly operation without sacrificing people’s health and safety.
